Chapter Forty-Five

The Freightliner drove past the retracted 3-metre security gate into Rudd's wrecking yard. It was a big operation; Rudd senior had spent 32 years turning it from a part-time gig to bring in some extra cash to supplement his work as a mechanic and built it into the largest wrecking yard in Lismore.

Billy drove the rig through the vast parking area and made a U-turn. He then backed the trailer in front of the large crane that had a huge circular magnet about 4 metres in diameter suspended from its towering arm. The yard was divided into three sections. There was a loading area for new car drop-offs, A crushing plant to the side of that and out the back a collection of about 1000 vehicles of all types and makes that were sourced for parts. The parts business used to be the most profitable, but as cars became more disposable and with so many competing brands and models on the road, it brought diminishing returns. The primary income source from the yard was crushing cars for scrap.

That's what was going to happen to the Falcon XR8.

Billy climbed down from the rig and took a 360-degree turn just to scan the yard for any onlookers. There were no other vehicles in the visitor's area and so he walked into the office. On the way, he got the two-way out and called Grimaldi.

'We're here boys, safe and sound, stay put until I call you.'

Grimaldi replied, 'Got it.'

As he walked in the office, Rudd senior was sitting in an old swivel chair with his boots up on the desk and coffee in his hand.

'Glad you turned up… I was starting to get concerned.'

'Yeah well, I just got stopped at a roadblock outside of town, Feds and task force is my guess…they weren't too friendly.

'So, you got through alright?'

'Yeah, but they wanted to look in the back, thank Christ we put the two crushers in the back, or we would have been busted.'

Joe looked at his son and just shook his head in disbelief.

He took his feet off the desk, slammed down the last of the coffee and started to walk out to the rig. Before he left, he viewed the large security monitor CCTV feeds. Joe had installed a lot of cameras for a wrecking yard. Twelve in total and a few of them were strategically placed so they could see down the road for any lurking vehicles or surveillance.

'Right, I'll make the call.' He pulled out a mobile phone that looked like a military spec field phone…it was encased in armour. He opened the "signal" app and made a call.

'Hi, its Joe…freight has arrived.'

The voice, on the other end, replied, 'Roger that.'

The voice was of the Cartels second in command- Robert Tribbolini, who was Arlo Deville’s cousin and Grimaldi’s second cousin.

Joe Rudd walked out towards the Freightliner and said to Billy,

'Get in the forklift and take those crushers out will you, then get the men to stay put until the others arrive.
